What is the importance of water as a natural resource? Describe any 4 methods of conserving water.

The need of the hour is to conserve and manage water because although the total composition of water on earth is almost 70 percent but fresh water reserves are only 2 percent.Hence,in the present scenario of increasing rate of population,the resources in order to be equitably distributed, should be managed and preserved.We need water for the following reasons:-
1)to survive
2)irrigation
3)industrial production
4)maintain the balance in nature
Some methods that can be used to conserve water are as follows-
1)In hill and mountainous regions, people build diversion channels like the 'guls' or 'kuls' of the Western Himalayas for agriculture.
2)'Rooftop rainwater harvesting' was commonly practiced to store drinking water, particularly in Rajasthan.
3)In the flood plains of Bengal, people developed inundation channels to irrigate their fields.
4)In arid and semi-arid regions, agricultural fields were converted into rain fed storage structures that allowed the water to stand and moisten soil like the 'khadins' in Jaisalmer and 'Johads' in other parts of Rajasthan.
