ICT – MEDIATED INSTRUCTION
INTRODUCTION
The developing societies of the Caribbean are heavily dependent on the education of their human resource for continued economic growth and social development. Consequently great emphasis has been placed on the quality of education being offered in schools throughout the Caribbean. The advent of Information and Communications Technology has presented these societies with greater opportunities for educational advancement. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is defined by Blurton (1999) as a, “diverse set of technological tools and resources used to communicate, and to create, disseminate, store, and manage information.”
BENEFITS OF ICT-MEDIATED INSTRUCTION
The incorporation of ICT tools in education poses great benefits for teachers and students alike. One such benefit is the development of higher order thinking skills in students. The use of ICT tools in education allows students to engage in authentic learning activities as encouraged by Constructivists theorists. These experiences permit students to interact with the real world and to develop and encounter knowledge independently. Further, these processes encourage students to think critically and creatively, and to apply skills such as analysis and synthesis when learning. For example, research has shown that students are able to develop critical thinking skills through collaboration with other learners in online (McPherson, Wang, Hsu & Tsuei as cited in Developing Higher Order Thinking Skills, n.d.). Mcloughlin & Lin (2007) further posits that the use of ICT tools such as wikis and blogs promotes collaborative learning, which can improve the teaching and learning process as it deepens the level of engagement and collaboration among students.
The incorporation of ICT tools in the teaching and learning process can also greatly improve the efficiency of the management and administration of teaching. The teaching and learning process starts long before the teacher enters the class. Therefore, a lot of time is spent locating necessary resources and developing strategies for teaching various concepts. This process can often be a time consuming one, which teachers unfortunately do not always see through. However, research found that one of the most obvious effects of ICT use for teachers was the improved efficiency of teachers, as they were able to more easily access resources for preparing teaching materials and presenting lessons (Lai and Pratt as cited in Imsir, Ozyildirim and Sabanci, 2014).
