The conversion of gaseous state to liquid state can also be brought about by application of pressure. The gases have to cooled below a certain temperature and then subjected to application of high pressure. This entire process is called liquefaction.

Unlike other gases like ammonia, we can't liquefy argon simply by compressing it at room temperature, because it's above its critical temperature of 151 K. And even at 151 K we would need about 49 atmospheres of pressure. To liquefy it at atmospheric pressure we need to get it down to 87.3 K. Hence liquefaction of argon is done by the help of helium because helium is considered as a cooling superconductor.
