“Octo” means “eight”. In western music we use diatonic scales which are seven notes long. The eighth note in the diatonic scale is considered a repetition of the first but at a higher pitch. Octaves are so similar that played together they can seem to blend into one tone. This is because the octave above is found in the natural overtone series of a tone. When you divide a vibrating string in half, quarters and eighths you get progressive octaves above the starting pitch (halfway is one octave higher, a quarter is two octaves higher etc).

The C major scale is a diatonic scale:

C D EF G A BC…

The note C appears twice but the second C vibrates twice as fast as the first and is an octave higher. The scale would continue with the same note names but sounding at higher octaves. Using the same names for notes these notes helps to simplify our system so you don’t have to learn unique names for every note across the entire range of tones.

Think of the days of the week- every seven days we start over again. Imagine then having to learn 30 unique names for days in a month or 365 unique names for days in the year. Instead we repeat the names and assign numbers for specific dates. We do the same in music.

A better analogy might be to fold pieces of paper into half. You could keep folding in half as much as you’re able. There’s a proportional relationship between those sizes.

Depending on where you start and depending on the range your instrument is capable of producing, you can think of notes with the same letter names as being an octave higher or lower.

Remember that even things though western music divides an octave into twelve notes the name “octave” has to do with this system of diatonicism which creates the push and pull of a key structure. These seven notes create a system where one note is most important and other notes have secondary functions and we can either move toward a key note or away from it. Twelve equally spaced notes means that each note can be equally important or not.
