Wave propagation is any of the ways in which waves travel. With respect to the direction of the oscillation relative to the propagation direction, we can distinguish between longitudinal wave and transverse waves. For electromagnetic waves, propagation may occur in a vacuum as well as in a material medium. These waves are of a higher frequency than surface waves. The first kind of body wave is the P wave or primary wave. This is the fastest kind of seismic wave, and, consequently, the first to 'arrive' at a seismic station. The P wave can move through solid rock and fluids, like water or the liquid layers of the earth.

Explanation:

The medium of earthquake waves is earth as follows:

  • Earthquake waves are seismic waves produced when energy builds up and fractures in rocks.

Each earthquake produces waves several waves majorly produce four waves namely P waves, S waves, Love waves and Rayleigh waves.

  • P waves – P waves travel away from an earthquake's focus where the rocks first fractured by compressing and extending the rocks as they move through solids, fluids and gasses.
  • S waves - S waves travel in a movement comparable to a rope held tight at one end while quickly lifting back and forth at the other end.
  • Love waves - Love waves move in the ground side by side and faster than Rayleigh.
  • Rayleigh waves - The waves of Rayleigh also move on the ground but are nearer to how waves move in the ocean
