Spirogyra converts solar energy to chemical energy through photosynthesis. The light is absorbed through the chlorophyll in the chloroplasts. All wavelengths of light are reflected, except for green, which is why it appears green to us. Chlorophyll causes the light energy and carbon dioxide to take part in a reaction that enables the formation of ATP and NADPH.

\toSpirogyra Longata performs photosynthesis to receive its nutrients. This alga contains special cells called stomata that open and close so the organism can take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen during the chemical reaction in photosynthesis.
