RCOOH can be converted into RCH_{2}OH by using LiAlH_{4} ( Lithium aluminium hydride ) .

RCOOH + LiAlH_{4}  →  RCH_{2}OH

  • This reaction usually takes place in the presence of Et2O or THF followed by H_{3}O^{+} ions .
  • This reaction is of type Nucleophilic Acyl Substitution then Nucleophilic Addition .
  • NaBH_{4} is less reactive than LiAlH_{4} . So , it can not reduce carboxylic acid .
