Hello Friend

The sun near horizon appears to be flattened. This is due to the atmoshpheric refraction. The density and the refractive index of the atmoshphere decreases with the altitude so the rays from the top and the bottom portions of the sun on the horizon are refracted by different degrees.

This causes the apparent flattening of the sun .

However the rays from the sides of sun on a horizontal planes are generally refracted by the sane amount so sun appears circular along its sides.

the water droplets act like prism.thaey refract and disperese the incident light then reflect it and finally refract it. when it comes out due to dispersion of light and internal reflection flattening of sun occur

hpoe this will help u
