Prostaglandins are chemicals which is present in endometrial lining at the beginning of bleeding phase of menstruation. It causes mucosity of endometrium and helps the layer to worn off so that it is mixed with blood nd mucus causing bleeding during periods. During heavy periods the prostaglandins secreted are in large amounts. This causes vigorous contraction of myometrium(muscle layer) allowing endometrium to break and get seperated from uterus. This vigorous contraction results in myometrial muscle spasms and cramps. This may cause severe pain during periods.
