Nitrogen fixing bacteria are the microbes which are present in soil or in the 0lants roots that change nitrogen gases from the atmosphere into solid nitrogen compounds that plants can use in the soil

see friend......
the plants cannot convert atmospheric nitrogen into usable nitrogen.
so, some plants called leguminous plants, convert the atmospheric nitrogen into usable nitrogen.these plants have root nodules in their roots.these root nodules have bacteria which can fix the atmospheric nitrogen into usable nitrogen.an example of a nitrogen fixing bacteria is rhizobium.
hope it helps you......
