I have two answers
1) The castle site was used to create a purpose-built observatory for John Flamsteed, the Astronomer Royal, in 1675. Before the observatory was built Flamsteed used one of the turrets of the White Tower at the Tower of London to make his observations of the stars.
2) It played a major role in the history of astronomy and navigation, and is best known for the fact that the prime meridian passes through it, and thereby gave its name to Greenwich Mean Time. ... ROG, the National Maritime Museum, the Queen's House and Cutty Sark are collectively designated Royal Museums Greenwich.
