In System Internation unit the amount of a substance is measured in a mole. It is abbreviated as "mol".

It is defined as " the amount of a substance that contains 6.022 x 10^23 number of particles i.e. atoms, ions or molecules".

Another definition of the mole is "the atomic mass, formula mass or molecular mass of a substance expressed in grams is called mole".

For example, 12 g of carbon is equal to 1 mole and it contains 6.022 x 10^23 number of atoms in it.
