Furthermore, tying Asia's economy to Europe through the waterway and from Europe further to Western Hemisphere. Obviously it's importance is main that it negates travel by ship all the way round the continent of Africa. With its new development, it's now got an extra lane for ships to navigate as a two-way high-way making for faster transit and improved shipping times. A further update is the depth of the canal. It is now deeper to allow for easier navigation and the passing of the biggest container ships around to allow more volume and higher frequency.
