Kabuliwala basically narrates the story of a person from Kabul and this girl called (not really sure of her name) mini something who is attached to him from a very young age. So this one day kabuliwala comes to mini’s house to give her some dried fruit and raisins. Mini goes running to him and then sits with him and talks and talks and talks while kabuliwala just listens in silence. Mini’s father is a writer and is working on a story at the moment. He reflects how at the young age of 5 mini never had anyone listen to her like her father does. Mini and this kabuliwala have an inside joke: she would ask- oh kabuliwala what do you have in ur sack and he would reply: elephant. He would then ask her when she would go to her in-laws. Not understanding the meaning of in-laws she would ask him the question back and he would reply- I will punch my in-laws with a fist. The thought of his in-laws all battered up would crack up mini and they would sit and laugh for hours. Then one day, the silence of the morning is broken by noises from outside and mini’s father sees a bloodied kabuliwala being led away by policemen. He comes to know that kabuliwala had rented a person or given him some to keep( don’t really remember which one) and when asked to return, the man defies having ever taken money from him. This angers kabuliwala and he stabs the man. He is sentenced to 10 years in jail. After completing his sentence one day, kabuliwala returns to mini’s house to meet her and comes to know that she is getting married. He asks to meet her but she shys away. He just asks her father to hand over some raisins to her and is downcast when he leaves her house. When her father asks what happened, kabuliwala says that mini reminds him of her daughter back in Kabul, and shows a charcoal hand print of his daughter. Mini’s father gives him some money and asks him to return to Kabul and be with his daughter. (BTW, his daughter is almost mini’s age)
