The theme (idea) of the poem is that everyone faces a situation in one's life when a decision is to be made between the alternatives. After becoming famous or rich some years later, one can be proud of one's choices they one had made earlier. He advised to choose the less chosen and more difficult path to become a hero or earn fame later.
Robert Frost's friend was hesitating to join the war. The poem was to tell him to choose the less trodden path and become a hero. So he could then recall that because he had chosen to fight war, he had become a hero.
