Why is a steam burn worse than boiling water burn

Steam contains the heat energy in it which is equal to the latent heat of vaporization.  This is additional heat energy in it compared to boiling water at 100 deg C.

So when steam comes in contact with the skin, on the same amount of area as boiling water,  more heat is transferred to the skin.  So it burns more.

1. A given quantity of steam contains more heat than the same quantity of boiling water at the same temperature.

2. When steam comes in contact with one's body, it releases extra heat of 540 calories per gram and causes a more serious burn than that caused by boiling water.

Hope it helps!
