total momentum is zero
since 0=MV+mv (conservation of momentum)
gun and bullet are at rest before firing so momentum before firing is zero which is equal to total momentum after firing

This is an isolated system, since no outside forces exert impulses on the system. (We are ignoring gravity and air resistance.) The gun and the bullet are both at rest, so the momenta (mv) of the gun and the bullet are both zero. So, the total momentum of the system before the bullet is fired is zero.

We know that total

momentum after firing = total momentum before firing

So the combined momentum after firing the bullet is zero
