each sulphur atom shares 1 electron  to each oxygen atom
thus, it has two valence electrons.
valency is also 2

dbskumar: thanks
Nasra1: :-)

It is 4 as Oxygen's valency is w and the compound is SO2 there it's valency will be 2×2 i.e. 4

Nasra1: how 4?
dbskumar: so2 is a covalent bond
dbskumar: thus valency is 2
dbskumar: but sulphur has 4 valency in ionic bonded compounds
TJ7: Oxygen always forms a double bond. Sulphur requires 4 electrons in this bond. It is similar to Carbon di Oxide I guess
