in this story there is a man private quelch ( proffesor) who is very boastful. he want to get a commission in the army as a soldier. he worked very hard but in putsuit of his knowledge,he insulted his collagues and seniors.he publicly correct his collagues. he interupted corporall turnbull when he was lecuturing by telling him the exact no. of fragments that a hand grenade is made up of. this furiated the corporall turbull and he put him on the cookhouse duty as a a punishement which the professor mistook as a reward. he could be seen lecturing the cooks ,the correct way to peal potatoes. therefore people like private quelch could never be taught anything
