When charge carriers (free electrons) move in the metallic conductor, then the electric current is produced in the conductor. These charge carriers move and collide with the atoms present in the conductor and transfer some of their kinetic energy to the atoms and these atoms collectively raise the temperature and the conductor becomes heated.
This phenomenon of raising the temperature of the conductor is called the thermal (heating ) effect of the electric current.
