The above diagram is of:

 \large{  \cdot{ \blue{  \bf{Hydraulic  \: washing }}}}

This method is also known as Gravity separation or Levigation. It is process of enrichment of the ore or concentration of ore during extraction of metal (Metallurgy).

Let's know about this process much more...

  • Metallurgical processes involved a sequence of steps for the refining of metals.
  • Enriching the ore is probably the second step.
  • The ores when mined are mixed with gangue or matrix. The process of removing these impurities is known as Enrichment of ore.
  • One of these process is Hydraulic washing.
  • This method is based upon the difference in the densities of the ore and impurities.
  • The metal ores are heavier than the impurities or the gangue particles. So they settle at the bottom.
  • The gangue is removed from the top.

Do you know? This method is mostly applicable for oxide ores like Hematite ore of Iron etc.

Answer:

The above picture is :-

✡ Hydraulic Washing ✡

\mapsto This method is based on the differences in weight between the gangue and the metal. Gradually, the metal particles of the ore are heavier than the impurities. So we use the principal of gravity separation to separate the two.
