It is a long tube about 10 cm long and 20mm in diameter of passing through the mid-thoroic cavity. It starts at the larynx and runs to just below the sternum, where it divides into the left and right bronchi of the lungs.

The function of trachea is that it works as a passage.The air passes through the trachea and then enter the lungs, it is also known as windpipe. Its wall never collapse because it is supported by cartilage rings.
