This is your answer.

A transformer is a device consisting of two coils, namely primary and secondary, used to stel up or step down the voltage of an ac source without much of power loss. A transform works on the principle of mutual induction. The efficiency of a transformer is less than 100% because there is always some power loss factors like eddy current loss, hysteresis loss, flux loss etc., efficiency is given by, (output power/input power)×100.

Mutual induction takes place ONLY when there is a change in magnetic flux. For a steady current, that is, a dc source, change in magnetic flux is zero. Hence, there is no mutual induction and transformers cannot be used to step up or step down dc voltages as the working principle itself is not satisfied.

Explanation:

Transformer-It is defined as a device which converts low alternating voltage of high current into high alternating voltage low current and vice-versa. Efficiency of Transformer :The efficiency of good transformer is 99%. Related Answer.
