Mammals have nipples because the male and female bodies are built on the same general plan, programmed by the same genes, and diverge from each other only with respect to
(a) features important to reproduction and
(b) features that may be selected against in one sex or the other because they reduce reproductive success. It is simplest to build the male body on the same genetic/developmental plan as the female’s, and there is no significant harm or loss of reproductive success to males in having nipples, so there is no reason for them to “go away” through natural selection.
