The role of the parents in the story "His First Flight" is one of the important to make the young seagull learn the art of flying. They are an example of the way parents make their children learn new things. At first, they were very supportive and encouraging. They encouraged the young seagull but when he was not giving a try, they became shouted at him and ordered to fly. When this too didn't work, the mother left him hungry and tempted him with food. In the end, the young seagull was able to fly because of the help and encouragement of his family.

Answer:

The parents are wise and clever. They want the young bird to be independent and self reliant. The mother brings a piece of fish very close to the young bird and forces him to leap forward to get it. That leap forces him to use his wings and fly. Initially he is terrified but soon he enjoys flying. The reaction of the parents was quite appropriate. They too are happy to see their child confident and self-reliant. That is why they fly with him cackling joyously.
