The most famous saying of Socrates is--what I do not know, I do not think I know--by which he perhaps meant that wrong- doing is due to ignorance, and the wrong- doer perhaps didn't know better.
Now what we know about him is mostly through the writings of his disciples and contemporaries like Plato, Xenophon, Aristotle etc. He left no written account of himself. His talks about art of love or love of wisdom and his contribution to western philosophy is great. He is known for his dialectic method of inquiry in to the important questions like good or justice etc.
He claims no wisdom, considers himself barren but that he could bring out knowledge from others like a mid- wife and say how good they will be. Incidentally his mother was a mid- wife. He was doubtful about human ability to know the true wisdom.
I think his statement could be best understood in terms of humbleness derived out of right wisdom---
