Anions are negatively charged ions, and cations are positively charged ions. Zwitterions are ions with both a negative and a positive charge.
Amino acids are the well-known examples of zwitterion. These compounds have one ammonium (basic) and one carboxylate (acidic) groups. Amino acids are the building blocks used to make proteins and pep-tides.
