Ali was a clever shikari who was passionate about his sport. He was also extremely talented with a gifted eye, being able to spot a hare between the scrubs before the dogs could.

When his daughter Mariam left after marriage he could no longer enjoy hunting as he once did. Now he felt the pain that came from separation and couldn't enjoy seeing 'the bewildered terror young partridges bereft of their parents.'

Ali was filled with longing and loneliness. He would while away his time in self reflection. He finally understood that the grief and pathos of separation was inevitable.
