Archeologists are taking the two main things i.e., Relative method and the other is Carbon dating.

Relative method: On digging the fossils which are closer to the surface are more recent than the fossils found in deeper layers

Carbon dating: It is done by detecting the different ratios of the same elements .

that is isotope of Carbon(C) -14 which is radioactive.

and the genes as ell as the DNA of the fossil is also detected to find out that to which kingdom or species they belong.
