Food is a very important aspect throughout celebrating Diwali as it is a joyful time. Sweats are very important during Diwali as it is the most common kind of food eaten during Diwali. Some sweets eaten include Kheer, Gulab Jamun and Shankarpale.There are also several savoury dishes eaten. Diwali suisine is mainly a vegetarian course. Some savoury dishes include Dahi-Bhalle, Karanji, Samosas, Pakoray, Mathiyaa, Ghathiya and Aloo Tikki. It is traditional, during Diwali, that the women of the household cook all of the meals and food from home.
Some people eat different food and meals depending on which part of the country they live or originate from.

According to Hinduism, food should be treated with respect as they believe it is a gift from God. All food should first be sacrifices to God to pay respect before it is eaten. Hindus believe that if we eat the meat of animals we will start to develop animal qualities. Most Hindus attempt to avoid beef more than meat as cow meat means aghnaya which means not to be eaten.
