the ryots raised their voice because they were continuously forced by the Britishers to cultivate indigo for them and with no gain for the ryots and also for the field as indigo plants need more fertility of soil for which no other crops were cultivated..... the British forced the village headmen to sign the contract on behalf of the ryots for the cultivation of indigo...
