Women enjoyed pretty high status in Rigvedic period.They were eligible to attend assemblies that eleected king,they were free to choose whom they want as husbands etc(swayamvara) etc. But starting from the later vedic period their status went on diminishing till the late 19th and 20th centuries when the socio-religious reformations started.
