What made the narrator and his friends live in terror of Private Quelch's approach.?

They lived in the terror of his approach as Private Quelch was an condescending person. he thought he was superior and others were small. He was never tireless and always had the tendency to lecture people,considering everyone to be ignorant. He never missed any opportunity to show off his knowledge. This led to other trainees avoiding him all the time,terrified of his approach.
