There are three things which make the mitochondria are semi-autonomous in nature:

1) Presence of its own DNA: mitochondria has its own genetic material which is different from the genetic material or DNA present in the cell's nucleus.

2) Presence of own nucleus: mitochondria also has its own nucleus apart from the presence of its own genetic material.

3) Synthesising its own proteins: mitochondria is capable of synthesizing its own proteins which is possible due to the presence of ribosomes on the mitochondria.
