   Let us say that  an electric dipole is in a uniform electric field E along the positive x axis. The electric dipole aligns itself with the electric dipole moment M aligned along the direction E  (ie., x axis). So the positive charge is in the direction of E and the negative charge is in the negative x direction.

   Vector Dipole moment M (= 2 a q) aligns itself along the direction of Electric field E.
