IITians and non-IITians become so, way before either actually enters an IIT. That means, these kids have SLOGGED as well as UNDERSTOOD the +2 Science level far better than others.
Respect, yes, for being somewhere you could not be inspite of trying so hard.
Envy, need I say more?! *grrrhhh..*
Pay package all newspapers are aflood with pay packages of various IITs. Non-IITians know that such a package is but an unreachable dream for them, atleast while starting out.
Awesome professors We feel our profs are readers as compared to the multiple-PhD holding people teaching in system.
Our education/exam system is unfair. Have a look at their exam system. They have grades based on all-semestar perfrmance than basis on 2 hours(sessional) and 3 hours(uni theory). It promotes learning. It helps you achieve, apply and innovate. They have labs wherein they have to find errors in stuff, and help improvise it. They have all sorts of geeky clubs/associations that are godawesome, while we're stuck in our 20+80 pattern, trying to clear a 40 while trying to avoid pange with the faculty.
External. IITs don't have an external system. We go from huge books to last minute notes to Hanuman Chalisa for our external/viva.
Great living conditions I've been to IITB a few times. It's modern, yet it has the old romanticism, it's the kind of place one can call home (and most people do)! I'm a hostelite too, and the hostel life in my college and an IIT just can't be compared. The structure of the hostel, the mess, the canteen, the facilities (LAN, medical shops, the shop, etc) along with night canteen, the various dhaba kinda canteens, the travelling on bicycles, the hammocks in the hostels.. I could rant on and on about how great they live. They also have decent scholarships for people coming from all backgrounds. And the campus being huge, there are so many places to just hang out.
Festivals Be it techfests on cultfests, these kids can make things happen. In my college, the Miss Personality was not able to answer 2 of 5 stage answers (and the questions were supremely easy!) and she was the best possible candidate. I will not even speak about our best quizzers or techfests.
Nature of lectures mostly IITians have slide presentations. Most non-IITians dont have a projector in class. Some college have really small blackboards too.
Lovelife Yes, we're FAR BETTER THAN THEM. Speaking from personal experience, these people are generally confined to their campuses and prefer it so, since the campus is in itself so interesting. As a result of that (and the habit from +2 stage of being a geek) they lack the social experience. They are bad at 1 proposing 2 maintaining 3 gifting 4 understanding illogical romantic needs 5 after-the-making-out behaviour
Internships and contests. They keep flying out/getting huge stipends/cool winnings from national/international competitions. The competitions range from coding to quizzes to debates to app-making to what not! The structure of exams/classes of most non-IITians does not allow them the luxury of an internship itself. If yes, then at the most for 4-6 weeks. Hardly ever 8 or 10 weeks.
Public approval We'll never get the kind of attention IITians will get just by the tag. Any auntie will approve a 5 point IITian over a 90% University guy as a groom, just because he's got the tag. And yes, we hate the description but we secretly approve it for deserving people.
The tag.. Oh the tag.. the tag !!
Confidence We feel scared to talk tech/science with them. We're afraid to compare curriculums. If we're participating in some techfest, we'll take it for granted we'll lose to some IIT guys or that we won't match up to their expectations.
Driving till we pass out, we certainly drive better :)
The slang IIT slang is very stagnant (I'll say that because it hasn't evolved for years). 20 years back they called it Insti, afty, ditch, <all other half-words> and so do they now. Slang in the outside world is far more dynamic.
Sex ratio yeah, it's bad in there and much better outside.
Girls hell no, don't listen to Insti guys who call girls look like cows. They don't. I've seen so many Insti girls who're so pretty and so smart, and they CAN carry themselves nicely too. Outside, there are generally 2 factions. Pretty girls who're really as pretty as those magazine girls and smart girls who in no way match with the pretty ones. IITians should respect the girls for their brains than their looks. The former got them in. Also, IITians themselves aren't so good-looking/bearably-geeky themselves to expect pretty girls to flock around them.
We want them to recognize us too!
Getting out. They like staying in the campus all time. That's boring for us who go paint the town red.

Answer:

IITians are ruthless and have the ability to master any craft within the stipulated time frame - be it mastering the concepts of Physics, Chemistry, and Maths for getting into the college or learning the concepts of competitive programming in the penultimate semester to get a good job, they do it all.
