• The French Revolution which took place in 1789 led to the transfer of sovereignty  from the monarchy to a body of the French citizen.

• It proclaimed that it was the people who would constitute the nation and shape  its destiny.

• The idea of la patrie (the fatherland) and le citoyen (the citizen) emphasized the  nation of a united community enjoying equal rights under a constitution.

• A new French flag the tricolor was chosen new hymns were composed and  martyrs were commemorated all in the name of nation.

• The estates General was elected by the body of active citizens and renamed as  the National Assembly.

A Centralized Administrative system was put in place and it formulated uniform  laws for all the citizens within the territory.

• The Revolutionaries further declared that it was the mission and the destiny of  the French nation to liberate the people of Europe from despotisms and help  them to become nation.
