The bureau is crucial to the unfolding of the story because it stored Abel Merryweather's will apart from being an expensive item owned by their father. The sisters wanted to outdo each other and get their hands on it first.

The bureau played a main role in revealing the secrets of her daughters to Abel Merryweather. As the Bureau and Mantle piece were sneaked by Mr and Mrs. Slater to the hall from Grandpa's room. This was done to show Mr and Mrs Jordan that the furniture was theirs. They did it so as her sister Jordan goes for a bargain when she come to know that it was owned by Grandpa and they are not interested in loosing it.
