Explanation:

Micromax will make a fresh entry into India’s smartphone market next month. The New Delhi-based smartphone company has announced it will hold an event on November 3 to give buyers “a bonafide Indian choice”. This directly points at the launch of Micromax’s new sub-brand In. Reportedly, the company will launch smartphones ranging between Rs 7,000 and Rs 25,000 under the sub-brand.

One of the upcoming Micromax In smartphones was recently spotted on a benchmarking website, revealing some of the specifications. It will be called Micromax In 1A and will expectedly come with a MediaTek Helio G35 processor, a 6.5-inch 720p display, up to 3GB RAM and 32GB memory, 5000mAh battery, and Android 10. There could be another smartphone with a MediaTek Helio G85 processor.

Camera-wise, the model with the Helio G35 processor will have different configurations on different memory variants. The 2GB RAM version could have 13MP and 2MP dual cameras on the back and an 8MP camera on the front. Meanwhile, the 3GB RAM model is said to have triple cameras comprising a 13MP primary one, a 5MP secondary sensor, and a 2MP tertiary camera. There will be an upgrade to 13MP camera on the front.

Micromax is piggybacking on the anti-China sentiment that began after the border tensions simmered between India and China. A huge backlash followed it on social media, including strong urges to boycott Chinese brands. Micromax is pitching phrases such as “Aao Karein Cheeni Kum”, which might mean “Let us drop the sugar” in the literal sense but is discernibly a metaphorical use to minimise the dominance of Chinese brands (Cheeni is Chinese in Hindi) from India.

The Indian smartphone market is dominated by the likes of Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme, and Vivo, all of which are Chinese brands. Their strategy to undercut heavyweights such as Samsung and Apple worked in favour. You can get a good Android phone for as low as Rs 6,500 today, thanks to brands like Redmi and Realme. Micromax is looking to turn its business around using the same tactic. The company is also hoping to enter the mid-range segments with compelling devices, according to Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma.
