1) Multiple political parties are true democracy, as a single party does not give any options to the voters.
2) Each political party caters to certain regions and communities, thereby ensuring no community or region feels left out and all compete for the share of vote.
3) For contesting an election, parties put forward their candidates and manifestoes and hold public rallies to communicate their stand on national issues.
4) Political parties complement democracy by giving the voter choice in terms of various development plans to be followed and for all regions and people to have a say in governance.

I would say that it is the role of the political parties that is most important for free and fair elections in India. Because political parties play the most dirty trick during elections. So to ensure free and fair elections i would suggest following steps for political parties to follow:-

They should make the list of the donations public. that is the most imortant thing. Then election commission should make it compulsory that every donation should either be made via check or directly transferred in the account of the parties. and donation in cash should be prohibited.Use and consumption of alcohol should be banned during the entire period of election code of conduct commonly known as “aachar-samhita”

These are the three basic steps if implemented, could make the elections fair to certain extent.
