the whole upbringing of the child, then it’s the way the child is socialised to fit into their society, be useful and productive, and (importantly) be reasonably happy. Without that kind of education, we’d have to re-invent society and culture from scratch with every generation. As it is, every child is educated to be a member of their society, and can build on that knowledge to refine, improve and change their existing society. Without that insider knowledge that comes from being raised in a society, it’s hard to bring about successful change.

If we’re talking about school, specifically a government-funded school, then its purpose is to create an adult who is a net asset to the state’s economy rather than a net liability; and also to create an adult who is a functioning citizen. By contributing to your country’s economy and by being an informed, involved citizen, you help you country grow, change, and improve. You are also better equipped for the job of child-rearing.

And so the cycle continues….
