Let the number that should be added to be x.

therefore 1/4 + x = 4/9

=> x = 4/9 – 1/4

LCMof 9 and 4 = 9 × 4 = 36

=> x = (4 × 4)/(9 × 4) – (1 × 9)/(4 × 9)

=> x = 16/36 – 9/36

=> x = 7/36

So, 7/36 must be added to 1/4 to get 4/9.
