Sometimes an aquifer dips underground between impermeable rock layers. A sandwich of permeable and impermeable rocks is formed. This arrangement is called an artesian (ahr-TEE-zhuhn) formation. The upper impermeable layer of an artesian formation, usually shale, is called the cap rock.
