the first war of independence was started in 1857 which is also known as indian mutiny.

  • In late March 1857 a sepoy named Mangal Pandey attacked British officers at the military Garrison in Barrackpore. He was arrested and then executed by the British in early April.
  • later in same month sepoy troopers at Meerut refused the Enfield cartridge and as punishment they were given long prison terms and were put in jail this punishment.
  • this incident increased their Comrades who rose on May 10th shot their British officers and March to Delhi where there were no European Troops.
  • in Delhi the captured guns and eminations and Set Fire to the buildings and properties of the British and declared War on the Firangs.
  • The sepoys most of whom were Hindus and Muslims refused to do the army drill using the new rifle cartridge which they suspected of being coated with the fat of cows and pigs to destroy their religious sentiments.
  • therefore sepoys determined to bring an end to the company rule. The sepoys rushed from meerut to Delhi.
