What two colours are candy canes?
Answers
Of course, when it comes to candy, nothing is more recognisable than the candy cane's alternating red and white stripes, yet, according to Schildhaus, for 200 years prior to mass-production becoming automated, they were only available in one colour: white.
A candy cane is a stick candy with a cane shape that is frequently connected to Saint Nicholas Day and the Christmas season. Although usually peppermint-flavored and white with red stripes, they are also available in a wide range of various hues and colours.
History
"Stick candy" is mentioned in a record of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association show from 1837, where confections were judged competitively. The Complete Confectioner, Pastry-Cook, and Baker published a recipe for striped white straight peppermint candies in 1844. The 1866 Ballou's Monthly Magazine short tale "Tom Luther's Stockings" contains the oldest recorded use of the term "sugar cane." Despite being called "mammoth," no information on colour or flavour was given.
