They were successful in performing the translation in a cell-free system.

They extracted all the essential elements required for translation from E.coli in a test tube and added synthetic RNA which consisted of only uracil nucleotide (poly-U RNA).

The protein extracted after the experiment was poly phenylalanine. So, it helped in decoding the first codon out of 64 i.e. UUU codes for phenylalanine.

Later, other codons were also decoded with a similar approach.
