The civilizing mission of colonizers was carried out for the Westernization of indigenous peoples in the 15th – 20th centuries. The colonizing mission was driven by the idea of the civilization of backward people rather than economic exploitation. In the vague of civilization, French and Portuguese claimed that they are bringing western modernization to the colonies such as Angola, Timor etc. However, Education is seen as the most powerful way to modernize society. French had destroyed the local culture, religion, and traditions belief of the colonies because it was conceived as outdated by French.

Answer:

The civilising mission of the colonisers was a strategy to keep control over their colonies and strengthen their oppression over them. ... So the civilising mission was a method to keep control over the people more than the development of the local people.
