Before answering the question I'll give brief history of Mysore state.

Mysore was once part of Vijayanagara Empire and later it became independent under Raja Wodeyar as the Empire got declining. Now Mysore is an independent state, ie all powers concentrated in Cauvery basin (sir ranga patanam).Economy of the region grew rapidly as the entire region was river basin and fertile.

Conflict between Mysore and British came into limelight only when Hyder Ali assumed to power.

Actual causes of the war:

Hyder’s ambition to drive British away from Carnatic (ie present day Telangana, AP, Tamil Nada and Southern parts of Karnataka) and from India. Because they kept of interfering in the internal politics of the region which triggered Hyder Ali to wage war against them and to get rid of British. It was only the Mysore state in entire India in contemporary times which invested significantly in improving both agricultural productivity as well as Trade. Even when Mysore was relatively a very small state in terms of territorial extent It was one of the biggest threats to British in India . That's the reason British wanted to get rid of Mysore especially Hyder.

I think these two are the major reasons for the beginning of the war between Mysore and British. Later after four devastating Anglo Mysore wars and after deaths of two ambitious rulers (Hyder and Tippu) the political powers were given back to the Wodeyars, Mysore became subordinate to British Empire and started exploiting this region as well.

Hope this helps.
