Hyder Ali succeeded in getting the support of the Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad and also managed to force English into signing the ‘The Madras peace Treaty’ which resulted in the end of the first Anglo-Mysore war. As per the terms of the treaty, the signatories had to mutually help each other in the event of an attack by a third party. When the Marathas attacked Mysore, the English did not come to the rescue of Hyder Ali as per the Treaty. Hyder Ali then concluded that the British could not be trusted. Mahe was a colony of the French and was ruled by Hyder Ali. The British capture of Mahe, with the support of the Marathas and The Nizam, led to the Second Anglo Mysore War which also led to the defeat of Hyder Ali.
