The jute industry was dealt a heavy blow by the partition of India.
The partition of the country made a barrier between the jute-growing districts of East Pakistan and the jute mills that were mostly concentrated around Calcutta.
More than 81% of jute cultivation was done in East Pakistan while most mills for processing raw jute were in India.
East Pakistan levied export taxes on raw jute that sharply reduced the jute quality that was sent to India.
There were two main consequences due to it.
(1) A sharp increase in the cost of raw jute, and
(2) A steep fall in raw jute supply to mills in India.
